We currently have a full time, 40 hour per week (weekend and holiday rotations required) Vascular Access Specialist
This position will be focused in Massachusetts, but will be required to have an RN license in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts for coverage as needed.
Job Summary: This specialized registered clinician provides an expert level of patient care related to vascular access services. This includes venous evaluation, both pre and post venous access, device placement (specifically midline and PICC) and ongoing monitoring. Consultation regarding appropriate line placement and vessel preservation with other members of the healthcare team is a vital function of this clinician for patients in the home, within other clinical settings and at the member hospitals/health systems.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Assesses each patient’s vascular access needs based on treatment regimen, duration of therapy, and patient specific characteristics such as; age, HX of prior infusion therapy, and comorbidities.
- Collaborates with providers/referral sources to assist in selection of appropriate vascular access device (VAD).
- Places ultrasound guided vascular access devices and Tip Confirmation System (TCS) when applicable including but not limited to: PICC lines, Midlines, peripheral IVs.
- Selects the least invasive device with the smallest outer diameter, and the fewest number of lumens needed for prescribed therapy.
- Monitors patient throughout the procedure and reports changes in condition.
- Communicates with referring physicians or specialists regarding patient care.
- Educates patients, providers, and staff about device placement and care.
- Medication administration and patient self-infusion education as needed
- Provides advice and troubleshooting expertise to patients and staff.
- Comprehensively documents all patient assessments and communication with patients, caregivers, and other members of the healthcare team in each patient’s record.
- Inserts, maintains / troubleshoots and discontinues (as appropriate) all types of infusion access according to NELC policies and procedures.
- Maintains and demonstrates competency in the use and troubleshooting of infusion equipment and supplies.
- Participates in case conferences as needed.
- Demonstrates ability to perform PICC placement maintaining aseptic technique, utilizing measures that prevent patient discomfort and trauma related to procedure.
- Is responsible for the fiscal viability of the PICC program by entering the charges for the insertion, proper usage of equipment, and productive use of time.
Requirements:
- Current, active, valid licensure (or eligible) as a Registered Nurse, Radiographer or applicable professional authorized to provide vascular access to service areas of the organization.
- 2 years of OR, IR, or PICC insertion experience.
- PICC certification
- Bachelor or Associate Degree required
- N. license in good standing in the state(s) where providing care / services required
- Current BLS Certification required.
- Valid driver’s license required.
- Excellent driving record required.
- Excellent patient assessment skills required.
- Ability to communicate effectively with all customers and members of the healthcare team verbally and in writing.
- Good interpersonal skills required.
- Good organization skills required.
- Ability to work independently as well as a part of a team required.
- Working / practical knowledge of microcomputer systems including patient documentation systems, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook).
- Dependability in attendance and job performance required.
Preferred Experience
- Knowledge of HIPAA Privacy and Security Regulations preferred.
- Knowledge of the Joint Commission accreditation process and overall JC standards preferred.
- Working / practical knowledge of home infusion therapy administration / equipment use preferred.
